Preview: Real Madrid Vs Celta Vigo

Carlo Ancelotti is desperately in search of a victory for Los Blancos.

In the heart of Madrid, where the grandeur of the Royal Palace meets the bustling energy of Puerta del Sol, the Round of 16 fixture of the Copa del Rey takes us to Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid, where Real Madrid CF are scheduled to lock horns against Celta Vigo.

Real Madrid are reeling from a humbling 5-2 defeat at the hands of arch-rivals FC Barcelona in the Supercopa de España final. Despite Kylian Mbappé opening the scoring for Los Blancos, the Catalan giants dominated proceedings to secure a resounding victory, leaving Real Madrid with much to ponder.

In LaLiga, however, the narrative remains competitive. Positioned second on the table, just a solitary point behind leaders Atlético Madrid, Carlo Ancelotti’s men are firmly in the hunt for domestic glory. As they gear up to face Celta Vigo in their upcoming fixture at the Santiago Bernabéu, Real Madrid will aim to capitalize on their home advantage, and reignite their winning momentum.

Celta Vigo, currently sitting 12th in the LaLiga standings, have endured a season of inconsistency, securing only seven victories from their 19 matches thus far. Despite their struggles, the Galician outfit remain determined to elevate their performance in the coming fixtures.

As they prepare to clash with Spanish giants at the iconic Santiago Bernabéu in the Copa del Rey Round of 16, Celta Vigo will aim to defy the odds and silence the home crowd. They hope to orchestrate a monumental upset, securing a place in the quarterfinals and breathing new life into their campaign.

About Copa del Rey:

History

The Campeonato de España–Copa de Su Majestad el Rey, commonly known as Copa del Rey, La Copa or (in English) the Spanish Cup, and formerly known as Copa del Presidente de la República (1932–36) and Copa del Generalísimo (1939–76), is an annual knockout football competition in Spanish football, organized by the Royal Spanish Football Federation.

The competition was founded in 1903, thus making it the oldest Spanish football competition played at a national level. Copa del Rey winners qualify for the following season's UEFA Europa League. If they have already qualified for Europe through their league position, then the Europa League spot is given to the highest-placed team in the league who has not yet qualified (until 2014 this place was awarded to the Copa runners-up, unless they too had already qualified via the league).

Barcelona is the most successful club in the competition, having won 31 titles. Athletic Bilbao has the second-most wins with 24, while Real Madrid is third with 20. Athletic Bilbao is also the most recent winner, having defeated Mallorca in the 2024 final held at the Estadio de La Cartuja..
