Real Madrid have reached an agreement to extend Thibaut Courtois’ contract until 2027, keeping their first-choice goalkeeper at the club for at least two more seasons.
The 33-year-old remains firmly established as Los Blancos’ No. 1, widely regarded as one of the top goalkeepers in world football.
However, the deal leaves Andriy Lunin facing an uncertain future. With Courtois set to remain the undisputed starter, the Ukrainian international would likely continue in a backup role—if he decides to stay.
Lunin’s situation has attracted interest, with Villarreal reportedly making an enquiry about his availability as they consider a potential move.
Lunin Determined to Stay at Real Madrid Despite Backup Role
Despite uncertainty over his playing time, Andriy Lunin has no plans to leave Real Madrid this summer, according to MARCA. The Ukrainian goalkeeper remains committed to continuing at the club, even though he’s expected to remain second-choice behind Thibaut Courtois.
Lunin, 26, joined Real Madrid back in 2018 from Zorya Luhansk. After loan spells at Leganés, Real Valladolid, and Real Oviedo, he returned to the Santiago Bernabéu in 2020 and has been part of the first-team squad ever since.
However, breaking into the starting lineup has proven difficult. In five years, he has made just 62 appearances, largely due to Courtois’ status as the team’s undisputed No. 1.
Now, with Courtois having signed a contract extension through 2027, Lunin’s chances of regular minutes remain slim. Still, with his own contract running until 2030, the goalkeeper is said to be fully focused on staying and fighting for his place—despite the likely reality of a backup role in the seasons to come.
